چکیده

A soft X-ray excess has been claimed to exist in and around a number of galaxy clusters and this emission has been attributed to the warm-hot intergalactic medium that may constitute most of the baryons in the local universe. We have re-examined a study of the XMM-Newton observations on this topic by Kaastra et al. (2003) and find that the X-ray excess (or deficit) depends upon Galactic latitude and appears to be most closely related to the surface brightness of the 1/4 keV emission, which is largely due to emission from the Local hot bubble and the halo of the Milky Way. We suggest that the presence of the soft X-ray excess is due to incorrect subtraction of the soft X-ray background. An analysis is performed where we choose a 1/4 keV background that is similar to the background near the cluster (and for similar HI column). We find that the soft X-ray excess largely disappears using our background subtraction and conclude that these soft X-ray excesses are not associated with the target clusters. We also show that the detections of “redshifted” O VII lines claimed by Kaastra et al. (2003) are correlated with solar system charge exchange emission suggesting that they are not extragalactic either. Subject headings: X-rays: galaxies: clusters; methods: data analysis

Low-energy X-ray emission from the Abell 2199 cluster of galaxies

In a recent Letter, Berghöfer & Bowyer rediscussed the analysis of BeppoSAX LECS data of the cluster of galaxies Abell 2199 as presented by Kaastra et al., in particular the detection of a soft X-ray excess. Berghöfer & Bowyer stated that their analysis method is better suited and does not show evidence for a soft X-ray excess. Here we find it necessary to publish a rebuttal, because it can be ...

XMM - Newton confirmation of Soft X - ray excess emission in clusters of galaxies – the discovery of O VII emission from an extended warm baryonic component

We investigate a sample of 14 clusters of galaxies observed with XMM-Newton in a search for soft X-ray excess emission. In five of these clusters a significant soft excess is evident. This soft X-ray excess is compared with the thermal emission from both the hot intracluster gas and any cooling (flow) gas that may be present. A warm (kT =0.2 keV), extended (several Mpc), plasma component is par...

Soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet excess emission from clusters of galaxies

An excess over the extrapolation to the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray ranges of the thermal emission from the hot intracluster medium has been detected in a number of clusters of galaxies. We briefly present each of the satellites (EUVE, ROSAT PSPC and BeppoSAX, and presently XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku) and their corresponding instrumental issues, which are responsible for the fact tha...

The multiphase nature of the intra – cluster medium of some clusters of galaxies

The discovery of EUV and soft X–ray excess emission in clusters of galaxies (the cluster soft–excess phenomenon) challenged the notion of the hot (∼ 10 K) gas as the only dominant thermal component of the intracluster medium (ICM). The spatial analysis of ROSAT PSPC 1/4 keV images presented here reveals compelling evidence for substantial amounts of cold gas (HI) in the ICM of the Coma and Virg...

ROSAT and BeppoSAX evidence of soft X – ray excess emission in the Shapley supercluster : A 3571 , A 3558 , A 3560 and A 3562

Excess soft X–ray emission in clusters of galaxies has so far been detected for sources that lie along lines–of–sight to very low Galactic HI column density (such as Coma, A1795, A2199 and Virgo,NH ∼ 0.9−2.0×10 20 cm). We show that the cluster soft excess emission can be investigated even at higher NH , which provides an opportunity for investigating soft X–ray emission characteristics among a ...
